Oral Cancer Screening Guide

A dentist can look for changes in the mouth and discuss follow-up. Screening does not diagnose cancer; a concerning finding may need further assessment.

What to know

The dentist may examine visible mouth tissues and ask about changes. Mention a sore that does not heal, persistent lump, colour change, numbness or unexplained bleeding; these signs can have different causes. The dentist will explain a finding and next step, which could include monitoring, additional tests or referral. Ask what was observed, how soon it should be reviewed and whom to contact if it changes.

What to discuss before deciding

Understanding a follow-up

If the dentist sees an area to check, ask where it is, what the next step is and when it should happen. A visual examination cannot confirm a diagnosis. Depending on the finding, the clinician may recommend a recheck, referral or further investigation. Keep the appointment and contact the clinic if the area changes.

Share relevant history

Mention tobacco or alcohol use, previous oral lesions, recent changes and any symptoms that concern you. This information helps the clinician assess context; it does not determine a diagnosis on its own. Do not wait for a routine visit if a persistent or worsening change needs attention.
